In July 1941 Kiichiro Toyoda founder of the Toyota Motor Corporation expressed his dream to produce a Japanese car. His key aims were low price, high performance and good fuel economy. Ten years later in 1950 The United States Army invited Japanese car maker for a bid to produce a four-wheel drive truck. That is how Toyota BJ was born in 1951. Although Toyota didn’t win the bid. After the BJ prototype made an excellent expression by climbing to the six hill station of mount Fuji further than any vehicle have gone before. The Japanese police adapted it as a patrol vehicle and that is how Toyota started his first production. In 1954 Toyota BJ was renamed as Toyota Land Cruiser. In 1955 Land Cruiser 20 series was launched. At that time, it was available with metal roof and doors and equipped with something quite astonishing for that time air conditioning. By the year 1956 Toyota Land Cruiser was the first mass produced Toyota car to be officially exported to world market starting with Brazil and Saudi Arabia followed by Middle East and South East Asia and South America. Its toughness and go anywhere capabilities soon recognized and Land Cruiser reputation started to spread around the world. 1957 The US Army invited Toyota to bid once more, again Land Cruiser was not selected, but this time the superiority of the model acknowledged in the United Stated. This convinced Toyota to enter to USA market and the first Land Cruiser sold there in 1958. The first Land Cruiser also arrived to Europe market in 1958 when the model introduced in Barcelona Motor Show in Spain. In 1960 The 40 series was launched. The production technique was modernized and the vehicle improved with the introduction of low ratio gearing for better acceleration and off road performance. In addition, 40 series also marked a debut for its first diesel engine. In 1967 The 55 series arrived and Land Cruiser now made its appearance as cross country four-wheel drive vehicle first real station wagon. The 55 series was developed to meet American Standards of Safety and highway driving but it retained its off road capability of tackling rugged roads. When the 80’s arrived debut of 60 series marked a start of Land Cruiser seen not only as work horse but also a recreational family vehicle. This trend continued in the 80 series with adaption of airbags and antilock brakes. The 100 series marked the introduction of first Toyota V8 engine adding substantial power to Land Cruiser family.
